Should I Quit This Diet?
If you’re struggling to make progress with your diet and you're feeling unmotivated and uninspired, perhaps it’s time to assess whether this particular diet is right for you. Here are five signs that it may be time to quit your diet and focus instead on healthy habits that you can maintain long-term.
Lack of Progress
One of the most obvious signs that it’s time to quit a diet is that you’re not seeing any progress. You may have dropped a few pounds initially, but if months have passed and your weight isn’t any lower than when you started, it’s probably time to abandon the restrictive eating habits and explore other solutions.
Decreased Motivation
Sustaining motivation is key to sticking to any kind of diet, and if you’re finding it hard to keep motivated day after day, then it’s sensible to take a step back and reassess. Sustained motivation comes from feeling empowered and satisfied when it comes to our eating habits, rather than feeling like we’re constantly restricting ourselves from the foods we love.
Misalignment with Goals
When devising a diet, it’s important to have goals that are both realistic and specific. If your goals are too vague or unrealistic then no matter what diet you’re eating, you’re not likely to see results. Consider what you want to achieve with your diet and make sure these goals are realistic and achievable in order to ensure long-term, sustainable success.
Lack of Results
Even if your goals are realistic and achievable, if you’re not seeing the desired results, then it’s a sign that something isn’t quite right. Before quitting the diet completely, look at your lifestyle factors such as how much sleep you’re getting, water intake and physical activity levels, as these can all play a part in how successful any diet is.
What To Do Next?
If you’ve decided that it’s time to quit your current diet and focus on healthier habits, here are three things you can do right away:
1. Consult with a nutritionist to help you create a meal plan that fits both your lifestyle and dietary needs.
2. Start tracking your meals and snacks so you have an understanding of your daily caloric intake.
3. Incorporate physical activity into your routine - this doesn’t have to mean hours in the gym, just find activities that you enjoy doing and can stick to!
Ultimately, if your current diet doesn’t feel sustainable or enjoyable then it’s time to look for an alternative plan that fits your lifestyle. Aim for healthy habits that will remain for the long-term so that you don’t experience burnout from excessive restrictive dieting.
